Jerry House: A Playground Disguised as a Home

A Unique Residential Design by Arisara Chaktranon and Siriyot Chaiamnuay

Jerry House is a holiday home located at Cha Am Beach, designed for the Sahawat Family. The family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Sahawat and their four sons, desired a holiday home that behaved unlike a typical house with minimal circulation. Instead, they wanted a space that encouraged play and interaction, much like a playground. The design team, Arisara Chaktranon and Siriyot Chaiamnuay, rose to the challenge and created a unique residential space that promotes physical activities and family bonding.

The design of Jerry House is unique and innovative. The house is designed like a big piece of cheese, with a Möbius strip as the main route, reminiscent of the routes Jerry would take to escape Tom in the animated series. The house features five layers of net made from 5mm thick polyester netting, creating different slopes, heights, and sizes. These nets act almost like an extension of the floors, providing a safe and fun environment for the family members to play and interact.

The main living hall of Jerry House is the most utilised and liveliest space. It is here that the family members, including the grandmother, spend most of their time. The bedrooms on the third floor are linked by a tunnel, providing an extra route for the boys to switch their beds. The house also features hidden sliding doors and mirrored film on the ceiling, creating an illusion of floating in the air.

The design of Jerry House was not without its challenges. The clients did not initially expect the house to be designed as a playground, and what was supposed to be an exterior became an entire interior. However, the design team overcame these challenges and created a unique and innovative residential space that encourages play and interaction.

Jerry House is a testament to the innovative and creative prowess of Arisara Chaktranon and Siriyot Chaiamnuay. The house has been recognized for its unique design and has been awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. Jerry House is indeed a venerated product and a bright idea that advances art, science, design, and technology.
